i see that you use two 3D viewports, disable one and it would handle even more if you have enough ram :eyes:
the max i could reach was about 6 million polys then my 4GB of ram got filled and everything started to get extremely slow

I tried that actually, didn't make too much of a difference, beside, I like to be able to see the view from the camera.

oh i see, so your graphics card isn't overloaded, unlike you my graphics card is not powerful (intel HD4600) and it gets quite slow when i have more than 2 million polys in 2 different viewports

Haha, I don't have a good graphics card actually, I have a Macbook Pro Retina, and they don't come with good graphics cards at all! I have the Nvidia Geforce 650M, I've tried rendering with it and it gets overloaded by rendering a subdivided cube...

Cool.:) You can paint the bump map in real time by switching the render engine to Blender internal and using GLSL shading. You'll have to add some lights otherwise everything will be completely black. If you use an unwrapped plane with the dirt texture, you can paint the bump map if you give it another texture with the color influence set to 0 and the normal influence at 1.:D
